The banana tree is native to Southeast Asia, near Malaysia. Bananas are a popular fruit as well as vegetable. The banana tree is currently the fourth most important crop in the world after paddy, wheat and maize. Also, oranges are the second most widely grown fruit in the world.

Bananas cover 54% of the total land area under cultivation in Sri Lanka. it is rich in fibre, which is essential for the functioning of our body, as well as salts such as potassium. Therefore, eating bananas helps maintain a healthy state of health.

Type Of Banana Tree

Sugar Bananas

Height varies from 2 to 4 m depending on the area.
Stem bright green.
The edges of the leaf circle are completely bent inwards.
Leaf blade wide.
The outer surface of the banana peel is pale red.
The veins in the collarbone have emerged.
The size of the cans varies depending on the control conditions.

Amban

The trunk is about 4 – 4.5 m tall.
The green stem has purple spots.
The upper surface of the leaf blade is dark green and the lower surface is light green.
The skin of the banana face is purple.
Avery is closely blocked.
A nut is about 1 cm. 16 – 18 cm in length and circumference. Is about 14 – 16.

Anamalu

Variety 3-5 m tall.
Stem green.
Leaf blade wide. The leaf stalk is well open, curved outwards.
The outer surface of the banana face is purple-green and the inner surface is yellowish-green. In the early stages, the face of the banana is green.
The nuts are usually about 1 cm. It is about 25 cm in circumference. Is about 1.5 -18.
The weight of a cane is about 12 – 18 kg.

Kolikuttu

A tree can grow up to 2 1/2 – 3 m tall.
Stem green.
Leaf stalk with a purple-pink border.
Leaf stalk green, broad.
Mostly sword-wielding moray eels.
The face of the banana is purple.
The canine hangs down and the midrib of the canine is purple.
It has a sweet smell and the fruit is slightly curved.
Characteristically, these varieties produce spots on the fruit when ripe and the skin peels off when ripe.

Sour Bananas

It has a purple-red trunk that grows to a height of 3 – 3.5 m.
You can often see fake purple pigments.
The edges of the leaf stalk are purple.
The midrib of the leaves is purple-green.
The nuts are slightly curved and cylindrical.
Turns bright yellow when ripe.
The fruit has a sour taste.
Cans up to 25-30 kg can be obtained under good control conditions.

Red Bananas

Tree grows to 3 – 3.5 m tall.
Red spots can be seen.
The leaf circle is curved to the underside and its edge is limited by a purple edge.
The upper surface of the leaf is green and the underside is red.
The cane grows semi-horizontally.
The bark is dark and the apricot is orange.
The average weight of a cane is about 8 – 18 kg.
Bananas are highly susceptible to damage.

Netrapalam

A Netrapalam nut weighs a kilo or so. These nuts are big. The number of fruits that grow is less. The length of a nut is more than 30 inches [30 cm]. This large banana is also very expensive in Sri Lanka. It’s also a bit rare to see in these eyewear shops. The largest banana we see in Sri Lanka is the Netrapalam banana.
